Easter is coming up, and I have been thinking and talking with the husband and I think we are going away for Easter. I hope. Where should we go? We need a place that isn't too far away, something that isn't going to take a long uncomfortable bus ride away. So we are thinking Viña. I have never been there and have wanted to go for a long time. Now we just have to find out a few things, a nice, safe, comfortable, and affordable hotel, places to eat, and things to see.
I am excited especially after my depressing Easter experience last year.....spaghetti for Easter dinner....didn't take much to kill the holiday for me. So far nobody knows. I am pretty sure MIL will have a gigantic cow and try to make us not go our own separate way, but I am putting my foot down. We ARE going away, we need it. A little getaway will be nice for both of us. We need some time away from the family, time to figure ourselves out and time to talk about the future, my husbands least favorite topic and lately my favorite. Not because I like talking about the future, but because I need to know what I have to mentally prepare myself for.
Since I have never been to Viña, and most of my gringa readers have, I am asking for your help and suggestions. If anyone wants to help us let us know about good hotels, restaurants and attractions, please do so!! I am excited to finally get out of this city and get away from the family for a bit!!! Can't wait!! Thanks!!

I actually have NO suggestions. I think I am one of the few gringas who hasn't spent a lot of time in either Valpo or Vina. I've been like two times for day trips with S. for photography all over the city or with family just to go up the elevator thing on the side of the hills. :) That's all I got, sorry!
"I think we are going away for Easter. I hope. Where should we go?"
isn't it obvious...EASTER island!
Lydia, wouldn't we all love to go to Easter Island, but sadly that is like twice as much money as I want to spend. Oh but it would be great!!!
Kyle, an elevator on a hill?? I'll have to go just to see that!
hahah, i know, totally kidding in practicality. i've pretty much ruled it out of ever going unless I win a trip or the lottery.
Yeah well I know tons of places in vina but didn't suggest anything cuz nothing stood out. my friends stayed in a old grandmother looking hotel to me called hotel kiss in vina center for 15 mil for a private room and liked it. otherwise you know, theres the beach, the walk along the beach is good, check out calle valparaiso in the center, calle san martin can be entertaining at night, the mall, tons of restaruants. cafe journal is a bar/restaruant that all the gringos like (that typically doesnt make me like something alone but they have good drinks, good food, and decent prices though not cheap. its owned by a german family and nicely decorated, great for nights out too), i dunno. theres just nothing that i think "OMG YOU HAVE TO GO THERE!" If you head over to valparaiso..then i can come up with stuff. They do have the outdoor elevators/acensores/funiculares in vina too though i;ve never gone on one. valpo has cool ones for sure. i think it would be good fun to take a bus/collectivo to valpo for a day and walk around there too.
Well, I wanted to go to Valpo originally but since my husband seems to worry about my safety always, he wants to stay in Viña because I guess its richer and in his mind that means safer??? I guess??? I dunno. For sure if we can find a great deal for a hotel we will stay longer and then be able to go to Valpo for the day or something.
I love vina/ valpo and it is a great get away. Chileans have this unreasonable fear of Valpo-- seriosly, no more dangerous than stgo. Valpo has much more flavor, but is dirtier. Vina is much newer and fancier.
There is a great empenada place-- like 45 types on 2 Norte. If intersted, email or FB me and I can find the exact directions. Sadly, places to stay, my advice would be valpo, I have never stayed in hotel in Vina. Good luck. Should be a nice trip.
Maybe your husband would consider cerro concepcion or cerro alegre-- they are the upscale part of valpo. I can suggest places there. Just send an email or FB.
I visited some pretty botanical gardens in Vina a few years ago.
Regardless of where you decide to stay, I would definitely spend some time in Valparaiso. It's completely enchanting.
