We have a bunch of different options, right now we are looking for the "right" one. Which I don't think we will find. This blog is a description of a few of our choices, we would really really like as many opinions as we can get!!
Option A: J1 work exchange visa.
Description: He can get another J1 visa like he had when I met him. He will only be able to be in the US for his college break and would then have to come back here. Which would mean that I would be coming back here again. He would go with my work, WEUSA as a returnee.
Price: $695 for the program, $1640 plane tickets (estimation) TOTAL: $2335
Pluses:
- He will for sure get to come to the US.
- He will be able to work the second he touches American soil.
- He will be able to meet my family.
- He will be able to come back and continue college.
- He wants to stay in the US for a year to get to know my family and won't be able to.
- It's kind of expensive.
- I don't want to come back here for another year!! Even if we get an apartment!
- He will have to pay again to get in the US.
Description: The K1 fiance visa will allow him into the country to be married. He will then be able to apply for a work permit and a green card.
Price: Going with a lawyer $999 filing fee. Without a lawyer, NOT SURE.
Pluses:
- We will be able to get married in the US!!
- He will get to stay in the US for a year.
- He will be on his way to getting a green card.
- He will have to freeze a year of school.
- We have to be legally married within 90 days of him arriving in the US.
- He will have to apply for a work permit AFTER we are married and it takes about 90 days to get it.
- He will not be able to leave the US until he has his green card and the status lifted on it.
Description: The K3 visa will allow me to bring my spouse into the US, get a green card and work permit.
Pluses:
- He will be able to work as soon as he gets to the US.
- He will be able to stay in the US for the year we want.
- He will begin the green card process.
- We will be able to have a wedding in the US!!
- We will have to pay fees to get married here.
- We will have to pay fees to get our marriage papers sent to the US.
- He will have to freeze a year at college.
- He will not be able to leave the US until he has the green card and the status lifted on it.
The prices aren't all stated on the Inet so I dont know how much things will actually cost.
Too big of a decision for a 19 year old...I guess I'll wait til I'm 20 next week to make the decision.

with options B and C he will have to come back to chile after 3 years before to get his green card...if he come back to chile before that will be a waste of time... both visas are the same in this case..
a girl from USA (she is married) told me that if you married in Chile you can come back to USA after 6 months or maybe a year (both), but no more than that.. and he can get a green card in your country and work there as option B and C... i dont know if with that option you have to stay longer in the USA .. but its an option..
also you should see if he can finish his studies in another place.. in USA... and get a student visa.. (rodrigo is in his 3rd year?..right?)
that´s another option...
(im still looking... i know its not easy... but be patient! :-) )
good luck!
Shannon,
I know how you feel!! Diego just got his passport this week and is now going through the whole crappy process to try to get a visa to come here... he wants to be able to go to our friend's wedding in the States, and also just to come here for a visit and to meet my family, before I move back to Chile... but the process is so long and involved and costs a lot! :( So I'm not sure what the best option for him is either... so anyway, if you find anything out as far as the best option for visas, please let me know if you don't mind! Thanks! Hope you're having a good week! :)
Jessica
Hey Vale, I didn't know you have a blog!!!
Rodrigo doesn't have to wait 3 years to come back theres a clause to that that he can get so he can travel back and forth.
It will be more expensive for him to study in the US and not worth.
Jessica, if D just wants to go for the wedding and a mini vacation, he can get a tourist visa, but make sure you send written invitations to him asking him to come and telling him the you will be able to support him while he is in the US. It takes FOREEVVER for mail to get from the US to Chile, so make sure you send it as soon as possible! good luck!!
about study there i mean, some schools, and institutes have something called: "convenio" that mean that he paid the same he is paying here in his school but he will be studying in another place..
some schools here have lists of universities were you can do that...
i dont know if rodrigo´s school have one... but that its one possibility...
because i know that its really expensive study abroad..
ask to rodrigo if he has "convenios" in his school..
and about the 3 years.. i dont have idea about that clause you mention...
what i always knew is that you cant leave the country (US) before you obtain your green card...and that process can be for 3 years...
are you sure about that??
where i can read more about that clause? do you know ?
and about the blog..haha..yes.. was an old blog that i had called "robotics" so i changed everything inside to keep the account. :P
