Ok so I guess I can cook with almost nothing.
Yesterday Ro and I went grocery shopping because well, we had been eating noodles, just noodles for 3 days. And it doesn't bother my husband at all, but if I saw a plain old noodle right now I would throw up. We are broke. Mostly because I left all my money in the US. Oh, and because I have to wait again to get a new visa so I can work. So for the moment my lazy husband is "working" and making the money for us. So, because of that we had to go grocery shopping with 15,000 pesos (about 30 bucks) and had to buy food to last us until next week. Which I can do. I can handle that, but going grocery shopping with my husband is like going grocery shopping with a 8 year old. So instead of buying a small thing of ketchup we had to get the big one, instead of getting cereal we had to get peanut butter, instead of getting some fresh fruit we got a bag of Lays (the biggest one of course....) I did get my jar of American spaghetti sauce and some chicken. My husband is a picky eater.... he won't eat fish or chicken because it has bones. He won't eat watermelon because it has seeds... wait, he's not picky, he's a lazy eater. So today as I looked into the fridge and saw the huge bag of ketchup, a bag of mayo and a bag of mustard in the door I had no inspiration. On the shelves of the fridge we have a liter of Coke, a 5 liter jug of mineral water, and my packet of chicken. In the cupboards we have some left over bags of rice from when his mom was here back in December and some sopa para una, oh and 2 bags of noodles. So what the heck do you cook when you have practically nothing? Easy. Chicken and rice. In the US, chicken and rice is my favorite. My dad makes it with Minute rice, canned cream of mushroom soup and or cream of chicken depending on what's in the cupboard and milk. Easy. Throw it all together and put it in the oven. Here, different story. First I couldn't light the damn oven so I gave up. I found a big frying pan and decided I'll just cook it on the stovetop. Hell I already was making it with only 2 of the ingredients needed so how could it taste worse. While fishing around for a frying pan I found a bag of ajo en polvo (garlic powder) it was past the expiration date, but unopened, so what the hell. Nice find anyways. So after I gave up on trying to cut all the skin off the chicken legs I powdered them up with the garlic powder and salt. I put them in the frying pan with some oil and browned the chicken. While I was pondering what to do next I took out the rice and knocked all the packets of sopa para una on the floor. Then it came to me! There were 2 packs of chicken soup with like 30 of aparagus soup. After the chicken was browned I dumped out the extra oil and put some water the 2 packs of chicken soup and a cup of rice in and threw the chicken back in. Then I went to watch the Olympics. My chicken and rice is not even close to being a delicious as the stuff back home, but I think I did very good with what I had. Now to wait for the Hubs to get home and complain that I made chicken and hear, again about how he doesn't like chicken and why couldn't I have at least bought chicken breast with no bones. Sigh.... chicken legs are cheaper than boneless chicken breasts. When will he ever learn??
